Pioneer Award

The Pioneer Award recognizes individuals who have had a significant impact on the field of nanotechnology by virtue of initiating new areas of research, development or engineering.

2023 Nanotechnology Council Awards Ceremony

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council announces its 2023 Award Winners. Awards were presented at its 23rd IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (NANO 2023) held in Jeju, Republic of Korea on 3-5 July 2023.

The Pioneer, Early Career, Chapter of the Year, TNANO Best Paper, Technical Committee, and Best PhD Thesis awards were featured.

2022 NTC Award Winners Announced

NTC Announces its 2022 Individual Award Winners.

Pioneer Award
The Pioneer Award recognizes individuals who have had a significant impact on the field of nanotechnology by virtue of initiating new areas of research, development or engineering.

The 2022 Pioneer Award goes to Professor Xiuling Li, Temple Foundation Endowed Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Microelectronics Research Center at The University of Texas at Austin.

“For innovative contributions to nanoscale device growth, fabrication, and demonstration especially nanowire epitaxy, metal-assisted chemical etching, and self-rolled-up nanomembrane technology”

 

Early Career Award
The Early Career Award recognizes individuals who have made contributions with a major impact on the field of nanotechnology.

The 2022 Early Career Award goes to Deblina Sarkar, Assistant Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and AT&T Career Development Chair Professor at MIT Media Lab.

“For innovative work in development of energy-efficient next-generation computing technology and fusion of nanotechnology with biology towards understanding the brain.”

2021 Nanotechnology Awards Ceremony

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council announces its 2021 Award Winners. Individual Awards were presented at its 21st IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (NANO 2021) held virtually on 28-30 July 2021.

PIONEER AWARD IN NANOTECHNOLOGY

The NTC Pioneer Award in nanotechnology is to recognize individuals who by virtue of initiating new areas of research, development or engineering have had a significant impact on the field of nanotechnology. The award is intended for people who are in the mid or late portions of their careers, i.e., at least 10 years beyond his or her highest earned academic degree on the nomination deadline date.

2021 Pioneer Award Recipient

Prof. Jean-Pierre Leburton, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

“For pioneering contribution to the theory and simulation of semiconductor nanostructures and low dimensional nanoscale devices.”

Jean-Pierre Leburton received his Ph.D. from the University of Liege (Belgium) in 1978. He is a professor in the UIUC Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a research professor in the Holonyak Micro- and Nano-Technology Laboratory and in the Coordinated Science Laboratory. He is also Professor of Physics at UIUC.

Professor Leburton’s expertise is the theory and simulation of nanoscale semiconductor devices and low-dimensional systems. His research focuses more specifically on transport and optical processes in semiconductor nanostructures such as quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots. Current research projects involve electronic properties of self-assembled dots for high performance lasers, single-electron charging and spin effects in quantum dots, modeling of nanocrystal floating gate flash memory devices, nanoscale Si MOSFET’s and carbon nanotubes and graphene nanostructures. His research deals also with dissipative mechanisms involving electron-phonon interaction in nanostructures for mid- and far-infrared intra-band lasers. Approaches to these problems involve use of sophisticated numerical techniques such as Monte-Carlo simulation and advanced 3D self-consistent Schroedinger-Poisson model including non-equilibrium transport for full scale nanodevice modeling.In the last 18 years, he turned his interest toward the interaction between living systems and semiconductors to investigate programming and sensing biomolecules with nanoelectronics.

2020 Awards Ceremonies

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council announces its 2020 Award Winners. Individual Awards were presented at its 20th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (NANO 2020) held virtually on 29-31 July 2020.

 

PIONEER AWARD IN NANOTECHNOLOGY

The NTC Pioneer Award in nanotechnology is to recognize individuals who by virtue of initiating new areas of research, development or engineering have had a significant impact on the field of nanotechnology. The award is intended for people who are in the mid or late portions of their careers, i.e., at least 10 years beyond his or her highest earned academic degree on the nomination deadline date.

2020 Pioneer Award Recipient

Professor Supriyo Bandyopadhyay from the Virginia Commonwealth University has been selected as the recipient of the 2020 IEEE Nanotechnology Council Pioneer Award in Nanotechnology, with the citation:
“For pioneering contributions to spintronics and straintronics employing nanostructures.”

Professor Bandyopadhyay is a pioneer in the field of straintronics which deals with switching nanomagnets with electrically generated strain for extremely energy-efficient computing and signal processing. He has also worked for many decades on spin-based classical computing. Additionally, he developed unique self-assembly techniques for nanoscale synthesis that led to the demonstration of novel optical, electrical and magnetic devices. In 2016, he was named Virginia’s Outstanding Scientist by Governor Terence McAuliffe and in 2018, he received the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award which is the highest award for any faculty member in any private or public college or university in Virginia. He also received his university’s Award of Excellence and Distinguished Scholarship Award – both given to one faculty member in the University in any given year. He has received many other awards over an academic career spanning three decades.

 

EARLY CAREER AWARD IN NANOTECHNOLOGY

The Nanotechnology Council has established an Early Career Award to recognize individuals who have made contributions with major impact on the field of nanotechnology. Up to two awards may be given per year. There may be one award for academics (persons employed by colleges or universities) and one for persons employed by industry or government organizations.

Early Career Award Recipient

Professor Mikhail Kats at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, has been selected as the recipient for the 2020 IEEE Nanotechnology Council Early Career Award, with the citation:
“For outstanding technical innovations and achievement in nanophotonics, especially for optical metasurfaces, light interaction with nanoscale films, and tunable nanomaterials.”

Professor Kats is an expert in the interaction between light and structured optical materials. He has made pioneering contributions to the development of optical metasurfaces, ultra-thin-film interference coatings, tunable optics with phase-transition materials, and thermal-radiation metrology and engineering.

 

TECHNICAL COMMITTEE AWARD

Each year, the Council will provide an award for the best Technical Committee for the prior year.

NTC 2019 Award Winners

NTC 2019 Awardees

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council announces its 2019 Award Winners. Awards were presented at its 19th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (IEEE-NANO 2019) held in Macau, China on 22-26 July 2019. The Council recognized recipients for  its Pioneer, Early Career  and Distinguished Service Awards, presented by the Council President, Prof. Tommy Tzeng.

The recipient of the 2019 IEEE Nanotechnology Council Pioneer Award in Nanotechnology, is Paul S. Weiss, UC Presidential Chair and Distinguished Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry and of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. The recipient for the 2019 IEEE Nanotechnology Council Early Career Award is Professor Han Wang at the University of Southern California. The recipient for the 2019 IEEE Nanotechnology Council Distinguished Service Award is Professor Fabrizio Lombardi at Northeastern University, Boston.
