IEEE Nanotechnology Council Elects 2019 Officers

Cork, Ireland (23 July 2018) – The IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) elected new officers at its Annual Meeting held July 23 in Cork, Ireland in conjunction with its 2018 International Conference on Nanotechnology (IEEE NANO).

Representatives of the twenty-two IEEE Societies who are Council members gather annually to conduct Council business and elect officers. This year four positions were up for election: President-elect for 2019 (President in 2020-21), VP for Conferences and VP for Finances (2019-20), and a new position, VP for Education for 2018-19.

James (Jim) Morris, Professor Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Portland State University (Portland, Oregon, USA) was elected President-elect for 2019. Lixin Dong, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University (USA) was elected VP for Conferences 2019-20. Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske, Professor of ECE and Director of VLSI & Emerging Technology DA Laboratory at Portland State University was elected Vice-president for Finances 2019-20. Arunkumar Subramanian, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC, USA) was elected VP for Education for 2018-19.  All positions, except VP for Education which is effective immediately, are effective as of January 1, 2019.

President-elect

Jim Morris has being doing nanotechnology since before the term was invented. His M.Sc. research at the University of Auckland dealt with tunnel diode circuits and modeling, and his Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Saskatchewan with nanoparticle thin films. Since then, he has branched out into sensors and embedded systems for automotive engine control at Victoria University of Wellington and the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, and developed a long-term interest in electronics packaging at Binghamton University, especially in electrically conductive adhesives. He is currently a Professor Emeritus at Portland State University, where these interests have merged in nanopackaging, and teaches two months/year in China. He has (co-)edited or co-authored eight books on electronics packaging and nanotechnology, including the second edition of “Nanopackaging.” two having been translated into Chinese. Jim has held visiting positions at several international universities, including the Helsinki University of Technology as a Nokia-Fulbright Fellow.  He has served the Nanotechnology Council as Vice-President for Finances (2015-2018),  Vice-President for Conferences (2013-2014), Awards Chair (2010-2012), Nanopackaging TC chair/co-chair (2008-2014) and Nanotechnology Magazine nanopackaging column editor (2011-2016 ).

 

VP Conferences

Lixin Dong is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Xi’an University of Technology (XUT) in 1989 and 1992, respectively. He became a Research Associate in 1992, a Lecturer in 1995, and an Associate Professor in 1998 at XUT. He received his Ph.D. degree in Micro Systems Engineering from Nagoya University in 2003, and became Assistant Professor at Nagoya University in 2003. In 2004 he joined Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich as a Research Scientist, and had been a Senior Research Scientist there from 2005 to 2008, where he led the NanoRobotics Group in the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems. His main research interests include nanorobotics, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), and other nanosystems. He received the NSF CAREER Award in 2011 and the 2008 American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence. He has served the Nanotechnology Council (NTC) as Administrative Committee (AdCom) Representative of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (2012-18); IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Representative on IEEE Trans. on Nanotechnology, Publication Activities Board (PAB) (2012-); Chair, NTC Technical Committee on Nano Energy, Environment, and Safety (NEES) (2009-); Program Chair, The 17th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (IEEE-NANO 2017); Program Co-Chair, The 16th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (IEEE-NANO 2016); Program Chair, The 13th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (IEEE-NANO 2013); General Co-Chair, Pre-Conf. Workshop Co-Chair, 2011 International Conference on Manipulation, Measurement and Manufacturing on the Nanoscale (3M-NANO); Program Chair, IEEE Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Conference (IEEE NMDC 2010); Editorial board of IEEE Transaction on Nanotechnology as a Senior Editor (2015-17) and an Associate Editor (2007-14).

 

VP Finances

Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske is Professor of ECE and Director of VLSI & Emerging Technology DA Laboratory at Portland State University, where she was ECE Department chair from 2004 to 2010. Previously, she was with the Technical University of Warsaw and the Research and Production Center of Semiconductor Devices. She holds a Ph.D degree in EE from Auburn University. Her research interests include CAD for VLSI and 3DICs, nanotechnology and nano/bio systems, and design for emerging and renewable technologies. She has presented tutorial, keynote, and invited talks at international conferences, published 150+ technical papers, and serves as panelist/reviewer for the National Science Foundation, National Research Council Canada, and international journals and conferences. Her research has been supported by NSF and industry. She received the 1990 Best Paper Award from Alabama Section of IEEE and IEEE CEDA 2008 Donald O. Pederson Best Paper Award in IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided-Design. She has served the Nanotechnology Council (NTC) as Nanotechnology Council VP for Technical Activities, 2016-2017; Administrative Committee (AdCom) Representative of Circuits and Systems Society 2013-14, and 2018; NTC Nanoelectronics Technical Committee, Chair 2016-17, co-Chair, 2017-present; NTC Distinguished Lecturer Committee, Chair 2016-2017; Technical Program Chair IEEE-NMDC 2016; Technical Program co-Chair and Award Committee Chair, IEEE-NANO 2017.

 

VP Education

Arunkumar Subramanian is currently an Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). His research interests are in the areas of nanomaterials and devices for energy and manufacturing applications. He received his doctoral degree in robotics from ETH Zurich and has held a post-doctoral appointment at the Sandia Labs in Albuquerque. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota and at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (India), and has previously worked at the Honeywell R&D Labs. Prior to moving to UIC, Arun was an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a recipient of the NSF CAREER award. His research has appeared in journals such as Science, ACS Nano, Nano Today, Nanoscale, and IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology, among others, and has also resulted in multiple US patents. He has served the Nanotechnology Council as Chair, Education Committee  (since 2017); Associate Editor, 13th IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (IEEE-NANO 2013); and Publicity Chair, 10th IEEE Nanomaterials and Devices Conference (NMDC 2010).
