Call for 2013 Officer Nominations

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) is seeking nominations for the following positions:

(1) Vice-President for Publications (2014-2015)
(2) Vice-President for Technical Activities (2014-2015)

All positions are two-year terms and start 1-January 2014.

Nominations should include a statement from the candidate and a bio in IEEE format. The deadline for nomination is July 5, 2013. A position descriptions and nomination form are in the NTC Nomination Package which can be downloaded here.

Eligibility: The Vice-President for Publications and the Vice-President for Technical Activities are nominated from current Adcom members or from those past members who have served as Member Society-appointed or ex-officio AdCom members within the previous three years. Review the AdCom roster here.

Nominations may be made only by voting AdCom members (one per Society, as designated by the Society).

Note: An individual may not serve concurrently as both a Council officer and a Council Member Society representative.

The election will be held at the NTC AdCom on August 5, 2013 in Beijing, China.

    NTC Elects VP Publications for 2013

    The IEEE Nanotechnology Council NTC is pleased to announce that Wen J Li, Professor in the Dept. of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), has been elected VP Publications for 2013. He will take office starting January 1, 2013. He succeeds Ari Requicha, who was elected President-elect at the NTC Annual Meeting in August 2012. Wen was most recently VP Conferences.

    Wen J. Li is a Professor in the Dept. of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) since November of 2011.  Prior to joining CityU, he founded and led the Centre for Micro and Nano Systems at The Chinese University of Hong Kong since September 1997.  He was educated at the University of Southern California (BSAE 87’; MSAE 89’) and the University of California, Los Angeles (PhD 97’, in Aerospace Engineering). His industrial experience includes working for The Aerospace Corporation (El Segundo, CA), the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Pasadena, CA), and Silicon Microstructures Inc. (Fremont, CA). He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine. He was General Chair of NTC’s IEEE-NANO 2007 conference. He was elected  IEEE Fellow in 2010 for his contributions in low-power integrated carbon nanotube sensors. He was also elected ASME Fellow in 2011 for his contributions in micro power generators. His research interests include nanoscale fabrication, sensing and manipulation.

    NTC Seeking VP Publications

    The IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) is seeking nominations for Vice-President for Publications to fill the remaining year (2013) of the term of office, as a result of a vacancy after the Annual Meeting elections. Per the NTC Constitution, if the office of a Vice-President becomes vacant during their term, “the voting members of the Council AdCom shall elect a new officer promptly”.

    This position will start effective 1-January-2013.
    Note that the regular election cycle for VP Publications will be at the 2013 NTC Annual Meeting in August for the term from 2014-15.

    Duties: The Vice-President for Publications chairs the Publications Committee, which provides direction for the publications activities of the Council. The VP Publications considers, with the participation of the Publications Committee, the publication needs of the Council and proposes to the NTC AdCom the creation, cancellation, expansion, or contraction of Council publications.  The Editors-in-chief of each NTC publication shall apprise the VP Publications of policy matters such as the designation and development of special issues, recommendation for a change in the number of published pages, and the appointment of Associate Editors. The Publications and Nominations and Appointments Committees advise the NTC President in the appointment of the Editor‑in‑chiefs, with the consent of the AdCom.

    Candidates are nominated from current AdCom members or from those past members who have served as Member Society-appointed or ex-officio AdCom members within the previous three years.

    Nominations may be made only by voting AdCom members (one per Society, as designated by the Society).

    Note: An individual may not serve concurrently as both a Council officer and a Council Member Society representative.

    The election will be held by email or online ballot of the voting members of the Council AdCom per NTC Constitution article C7.5:

    C7.5       Business Conducted by Telecommunication

    Business of the Council may be transacted by correspondence, or other telecommunication means when in the opinion of the President matters requiring action can be adequately handled in that manner.  All voting members of the Council should be informed of such interim actions, and a majority of the Council must be reached for ratification of the actions, if balloting is necessary, unless otherwise provided by the Constitution or Bylaws.

    Nanotechnology Council Elects Officers

    The IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) elected new officers at its Annual Meeting held August 20 in Birmingham in conjunction with its 2012 International Conference on Nanotechnology.

    Representatives of the twenty-one IEEE Societies who are Council members gather annually to conduct Council business and elect officers. This year three positions were up for election: President-elect 2012-13, Vice-President for Conferences 2013-14, and Vice-President for Finance 2013-14.

    Prof. Ari Requicha, Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and the Gordon Marshall Chair in Engineering at the University of Southern California was elected President-elect; he will take office January 1, 2013 and will become President in 2014-15. Prof. James Morris, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Portland State University, Oregon, was elected Vice-President for Conferences; he will take office January 1, 2013. Xiaoping Yun, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterrey, California, was re-elected Vice-President for Finance 2013-14.

    Ari Requicha

    Requicha is a Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and the Gordon Marshall Chair in Engineering at USC, and was the founding director of USC’s Laboratory for Molecular Robotics. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and is a Fellow of the IEEE, the ACM and the AAAS. He is listed in the ISI Web of Knowledge as a highly cited researcher. Requicha received the USC Senior Research Award; the first-ever Pierre Bezier Award; the Pioneer in Robotics and Automation Award from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society; and the Distinguished Service Award from the IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC). He is currently serving as the NTC Vice-President for Publications, and was Editor in Chief, IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology, 2007- 2010.

    Jim Morris

    Jim Morris

     Morris is currently a Professor at Portland State University, where his research interests are in electronics packaging and nanotechnology.  He is an IEEE Fellow and a member of the IEEE Components Packaging & Manufacturing Technology (CPMT) Society Board of Governors. Morris represents CPMT on the IEEE Nanotechnology Council, and serves as NTC Awards Chair, chair of the Nanopackaging Technical Committee, and as the nanopackaging column editor for IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine. He served as the General Chair of the 2011 International Conference on Nanotechnology (NANO 2011), and was previously CPMT Treasurer (1990-97) and VP for Conferences (1998-2003). Morris has edited four books on electronics packaging, including one on nanopackaging, and co-authored a fifth, and has two co-edited books on nanodevices nearing completion.

    Xiaoping Yun

    Xiaoping Yun

    Yun is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. He is a Fellow of IEEE. He has actively volunteered in IEEE as a society/council officer and conferences organizer. Yun was Finance Chair of the First IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology (NANO 2001), and has served NTC as Vice President of Finance in 2004-06 and 2011-12. Yun served as General Chair of the 2010 IEEE Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Conference (NMDC 2010), and was a Member of the NTC Fellow Evaluation Committee in 2006-07. He was Treasurer of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) in 2004-2010.

    (2) VP for Conferences (serves in 2013-2014)
    (3) VP for Finance (serves in 2013-2014)

    The Vice-President for Conferences and the Vice-President for Finances are nominated from current Adcom members or from those past members who have served as Member Society-appointed or ex-officio AdCom members within the previous three years.

    The President-elect is nominated from those who have served as Officers of the Council within the previous four years. If a candidate for President-elect cannot be found who meets this criterion, then candidates for President-elect may be chosen from the current Society-appointed members of the AdCom or among those past members who have served as Society-appointed AdCom members within the previous three years.

    Nominations may be made only by voting AdCom members (one per Society, as designated by the Society).

    Note: An individual may not serve concurrently as both a Council officer and a Council Member Society representative.

    The election will be held at the NTC AdCom on August 20, 2012 in Birmingham, England.
