Reminder: Call for Nominations – 2018 IEEE Nanotechnology Distinguished Lecturers – 20-Aug

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) is seeking nominations for its 2018 distinguished lectures. The NTC has created a distinguished lecturers program to enhance the visibility of NTC among nanotechnology societies. The NTC Distinguished Lecturers are appointed to honor excellent speakers who have made technical, industrial or entrepreneurial contributions of high quality to the field of nanotechnology and science, and to enhance the technical programs of the Nanotechnology Council chapters and conferences. Consideration is given to having a well-balanced variety of speakers who can address a wide range of topics of current interest in the fields covered by the Society.

The term for the Lecturers is from January 1 until December 31 of 2018. The Lecturers serve for a one year term, and may be reappointed for one additional year with approval of the NTC Distinguished Lecturer Committee. A budget will be provided each Lecturer to give lectures for NTC Chapters and NTC Conferences based on availability of funding through the NTC. DLs are expected to give a minimum of 2 lectures per year as part of their commitment to serve.

Candidates for DLs may be nominated by any current IEEE member, using the IEEE NTC Distinguished Lecturer Nomination Form. Self-nomination is not accepted.

The selection of distinguished lectures will be made by the Distinguished Lecturer Committee, a subcommittee of Technical Activities Committee (TAC) and approved by the NTC ExCom.

Reminder – Call for Proposals for Future IEEE NTC Sponsored Conference Sites

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) is calling for proposals for future sites for IEEE NANO 2020 and for IEEE NMDC 2019.

Early indication of an intention to submit a proposal is strongly recommended.

Proposals may be submitted in PowerPoint, Word, or PDF formats, but PowerPoint files are required for the presentation. A Conference Proposal Reference guide and a PPT template is available on request.

Formal proposals must be e-mailed prior to the appropriate deadline of 15-Oct-2017.

Request for proposals for the 2018 IEEE Summer School on Nanotechnology

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) is requesting proposals for its Third Summer School. The school is expected to maintain an educational focus on the fundamental theory and applications of any one of the thematic areas identified by the 2017 IEEE-NANO Conference, which is the flagship conference hosted by IEEE in the area of nanotechnology. These schools are expected to deliver highly differentiated programs in their topical area with content delivered by global leaders and thinkers from academia, industry, and / or research laboratories.

Dates and Length: The third IEEE Summer School on Nanotechnology will be held in the summer of 2018. This summer school is anticipated to involve a 5-day program, although slightly longer or shorter durations may be acceptable in certain cases.

Summer School Format: A successful summer school will consist of a synergistic combination of tutorial-style lectures (2-3 hour duration), research seminars (40-60 minutes), panel discussions, and/or visits to local academic laboratories and industrial organizations. Inclusion of additional components such as an introduction to potential career paths and avenues for research funding, which are particularly beneficial for early career researchers / students and are relevant to the thematic area chosen by the school, is highly encouraged.

Funding: The Administrative Committee of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council has approved $28K in total funding for the third summer school(s), with the maximum funding for a single proposal not to exceed $20K. This funding may be used for such expenses as travel contributions to participants and lecturers. Apart from the IEEE-NTC, the summer school is expected to be supported, in part, with funding from the local organizers. In addition, other sources of income such as participant registration (tuition) fees and / or industrial sponsorships may also be leveraged to meet the expenses involved with the organization of the summer school.

  • Notification of the outcome of the review process: 31 October 2017

IEEE Nanotechnology Council 2017 Award Ceremony

The Nanotechnology Council (NTC) awarded its 2017 Pioneer, Early Career, and Distinguished Service awards July 27 at the IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology (IEEE-NANO) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA). In addition the awards for TNANO 2016 Best Paper and Outstanding Chapter were presented.

The Pioneer Award in Nanotechnology recipient is Paras N. Prasad, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and Electrical Engineering, at the University at Buffalo (NY, “For pioneering contributions in creating multifunctional nanoprobes, applying nanophotonics in biomedical technology, and educating future researchers.”

The Early Career Award in Nanotechnology recipient is Professor Duygu Kuzum of the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, “For pioneering contributions in creating multifunctional nanoprobes, applying nanophotonics in biomedical technology, and educating future researchers.”

The Distinguished Service Award recipient is Dominic Massetti of OmniVision Technologies, Inc., Seal Beach, CA, for “Exemplary service to the IEEE San Francisco Bay Area Nanotechnology Council Chapter by organizing and facilitating educational and networking events.”

The TNANO 2016 Best Paper Award was presented to Yasunao Katayama for the paper “Wave-Based Neuromorphic Computing Framework for Brain-Like Energy Efficiency and Integration”, co-authors: Yasunao Katayama, Toshiyuki, Yamane, Daiju Nakano, Ryosho Nakane, and Gouhei Tanaka [IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology Vol. 16, No. 5, 762-769 (2016)].

The Chapter of the Year Award was awarded to the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter.

Call for Awards Nominations

The 2017 nominations for IEEE Nanotechnology Individual Awards are due October 15.

The award categories are Early Career, Pioneer and Distinguished Service.

Awards will presented at IEEE NANO 2018 in Cork, Ireland.
