President’s Message – Spring 2014

Dear Colleagues:

This is the second of my messages of 2014 to the IEEE Nanotechnology Council, emphasizing the most important news within the NTC.

Today I focus on the annual IEEE Nano Conference, which is our flagship conference. Attending it is one of the best ways of connecting with like-minded technologists and tracking what is happening on the research front. We have decided that the 2016 IEEE Nano will be held in Sendai, Japan. We had very strong competition for this conference, and the choice was not easy. Until recently we selected a conference proposal only about one year ahead of time, and sometimes there was little competition. We are now in a much stronger position, having committed to three successive Nano conferences, to be held in the Summers of 2014 (Toronto, Canada), 2015 (Rome, Italy), and 2016 (Sendai, Japan). We rotate the venues among the Americas, Europe, and Asia/Oceania because the IEEE is a transnational organization and there is worldwide interest in nanotechnology. Professor Charlie Lieber, of Harvard, who won last year’s NTC Pioneer Award, will keynote the Toronto conference.

I have the pleasure of announcing the winners of the 2014 NTC Awards. The Pioneer Award goes to Professor Stephen Chou, of Princeton. His citation reads: “For seminal inventions, developments, and academic-industrial impacts of new patterning methods, especially nanoimprint; and new paradigm-shift electronic, optical, magnetic and biological nanodevices”. The Early Career Award winner is Professor Mona Jarrahi, of UCLA. She is recognized “for contributions to the development of nano-plasmonic and nano-photonic devices and quantum well structures for the advancement of terahertz technology.” Both of our awardees are expected to make invited presentations at the Toronto conference. I hope to see you there.

As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions. Use the contact form below.
