IEEE NTC Mentoring program: from Effectiveness to Durability
(NTC MENED program)

First Training Event, July 8th, 2022, Palma de Mallorca, Spain,
in conjunction with IEEE NANO 2022

The major strength of IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) resides in its large number of members and volunteers, and the unlimited spectrum of nanotechnology applications. Currently, the IEEE NTC activities (technical, educational, conferences, publications, standing committees, etc.) and initiatives are extremely rich and rise the IEEE NTC to the level of a well-recognized world leader in the field of nanotechnology. To guarantee sustainability of NTC activities and to enable successful succession planning in the NTC’s leadership, a new initiative has been launched at the beginning of 2022, namely the IEEE NTC Mentoring program: from Effectiveness to Durability, or the so-called NTC MENED program. The NTC MENED program aims to enable the NTC volunteers to grow indispensable skills to carry out the NTC activities and to gradually integrate a larger number of well-trained NTC volunteers into the different initiatives. The objectives of NTC MENED program are as follows: 1) To reach a high level of success in the NTC activities; 2) To maximize the chance of new volunteers to reach their goals; and 3) To establish a mentoring culture that concerns the durability of NTC MENED program. Through the NTC MENED program, the final goal of NTC is to connect people and create teams in which everyone brings ideas, trust and rapport.

IEEE Nanotechnology Marathon organized by the NTC Young Professionals

Thursday, February 3rd, 2022

Under the patronage of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council 2021 President, Professor James Morris, the NTC Young Professionals team organized the first IEEE Nanotechnology Marathon. On the 24th of November, throughout a 24-hour period, 24 distinguished lecturers, nanotechnology experts, and influential scientists presented their work and the latest achievements.

The YP Team engaged almost 700 participants from six continents, starting from Australia, through Asia, Africa, and Europe, and ending in the South and North Americas. In the difficult times, this event is the best example of how creative and innovative approaches help popularise nanotechnology, without borders.

Abstract:

Magnetic Particle Hyperthermia is worldwide accepted as one of the least invasive cancer treatments.

The idea behind this modality is the interaction between magnetic entities, namely nanostructures with an externally applied magnetic field. Nanostructures are dictated to orient according to field direction. Thus, a bi-directional magnetization reversal occurs as alternating field oscillates, typically with a kHz frequency. Magnetization reversal in nanostructures produces energy losses (heat) in the surroundings.

Such heat, if adequately driven and selectively delivered to malignant regions may initiate specific cellular pathways concluding to apoptosis or even necrosis. To augment the field-nanostructure interaction and deliver the maximum possible heat, one has to seek for the best combination of magnetic nanomaterials and magnetic fields.

First, different features of nanomaterials such as structure, size, morphology to promote enhanced magnetic heating and second which magnetic field parameters may be fine-tuned to further optimize magnetic heating efficiency will be discussed.

Second, I will discuss current constraints of magnetic particle hyperthermia such as selectivity and regionality and propose alternative ways to confront them.

To conclude, case studies of Magnetic Particle Hyperthermia applicability schemes and how magnetic particle hyperthermia may play a role as a versatile multifunctional platform in modern biomedicine where heat excess may be the trigger for drug delivery or cell regeneration will be shown.

Nanotechnology Marathon

Under the patronage of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council President, Professor James Morris, the NTC Young Professionals team is organizing the first IEEE Nanotechnology Marathon. NTC Young Professionals Update

Since its establishment one year ago, the NTC Young Professionals (NTC YP) Committee expanded from one person to five highly motivated and active individuals. The committee members support their respective IEEE Regions: R7 (Canada), R8 (Europe, Middle East, Africa), R9 (Central and South Americas), R10 (Asia).

Four Regional NTC YP LinkedIn pages have been established and are timely updated. The regional coordinators established cooperation with the regional NTC conference organizers in order to support and ensure presence of young professionals. The following conferences have committed to work with the NTC YP team: NMDC21, NAP21.

Up to date, NTC YP have organized five nanotechnology webinars that gathered more than 300 participants. Another three webinars are scheduled. In March, during the first NTC YP Committee meeting, the plans and strategy for the activities and expansion have been discussed and are currently implemented. In addition to online presence, webinars, and conferences, the committee focuses on expansion to the USA IEEE Regions (1-6) and cooperation with NTC Chapters and YP Affinity Groups worldwide.

IEEE NTC YP India Activities

As the representative of the IEEE NTC YP India, It’s my privilege to share the summary of the First edition of the IEEE NTC YP India webinar series. Two webinars have been conducted each in November 2020 and December 2020 hosting the eminent speakers in the broad domain of nanotechnology. There was active reception, registration and participation to this first step in India on behalf of Nanotechnology Council. The webinar details and the photographs are shared below.

The First webinar was organized on November 21, 2020 10:00 am in India. It hosted Prof. Brajesh Kumar Kaushik, Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee 10 m and Dr. Mudrika Khandelwal, Associate professor, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad 10:30 am. Prof. Brajesh Kumar Kaushik, Regional Chapters Coordinator R10 India, the inaugural speaker of the webinar 1 has briefly discussed about the Nanotechnology Council and its details as part of his presentation.

Prof. Brajesh has briefly introduced the guests on Spintronics-Perspectives and Challenges “Conventional CMOS technology has reached to the brink of its scaling limits and poses significant challenges for the development of next generation high-speed ultra-low power costeffective memory and processing devices. These spintronics based novel computing approaches find applications in image processing and provides efficient solution to the complex computing problems. ”

Dr. Mudrika has briefly spoke about “Cellulose – the most common biopolymer – is commonly produced by various organisms such as plants, trees, algae, and bacteria. Bacterial cellulose in
particular is attractive owing to its purity, crystallinity, and being composed of a threedimensional network of cellulose nanofibres. However, the most important aspect is the possibility to tune cellulose properties during and post synthesis. We have successfully produced carbon nanofibrous anode by pyrolysis of bacterial cellulose for Lithium-ion batteries and modulated its properties to improve capacity, stability, and rate capability.”

The second webinar was organized on December 19, 2020 10:30 am in India. It hosted, Professor. Kamakoti Veezhinathan for his wonderful session on “Journey of indigenous SHAKTI Microprocessor”. 10.30 am and Dr. Chandra Shekhar Sharma for his wonderful session on “Candle Soot Nanocarbon for Energy Storage Applications”. 11 am. Prof. Kamakoti has briefly introduced the guests with the Open-source processor development initiative by the RISE group at IIT-Madras. The aim is to build an ecosystem of production grade processors, SoC’s and peripheral IP’s. Software Development Kits and IDE’s readily available to build applications on SHAKTI. Various drivers and sensor applications proven on SHAKTI based development boards.

Dr. Chandra Shekhar Sharma delivered a interested lecture on Candle soot. Carbon from candle soot is not only the most facile way to produce nanocarbon but is being explored for a large number of engineering applications including as an electrode for electric vehicles. He discussed briefly some of the latest results from the CARBON Lab, IIT Hyderabad in the talk. Candle soot. This ends the summary of the activities from IEEE NTC YP India, we believe we will grow and expand our horizons to have many more fruitful opportunities and wide outreach on behalf of Nanotechnology Council.
