Second Meeting of the NTC Technical Committee on Emerging Plasma Nanotechnologies

It is a pleasure to announce the second meeting (online workshop) of the newborn Technical Committee on Emerging Plasma Nanotechnologies of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council. This second edition, planned 6 pm CST May 10, 1 am (next day, May 11) CET and 8 am (next day, May 11) JST. It will be virtual with a very exciting program with speakers either from academia and industry. It is free but registration is necessary.

2022 Technical Committee Award to TC-06 Nanoelectronics

Congratulations to TC-06 on Nanoelectronics, 2022 TC Award Winner!

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council Technical Committee Award is a recognition for the work accomplished by one of the IEEE NTC TCs during 2-year period. The NTC TCs serve as focal points for research in specific areas of Nanotechnology. The technical activities developed by the NTC TCs are highly appreciated because of their impact in the scientific, literary and educational events coordinated by IEEE NTC.

It is our pleasure to announce that the 2022 NTC TC Award is accorded to NTC TC06 Nanoelectronics chaired by Malgorzata Chrzanowska-Jeske (left). Without any doubt we can say that the nanoelectronics technologies have made great impacts on human activities through every sector of the modern industry.

At present TC06 promotes technical activities associated with novel electronic and thermal phenomena in materials and devices at the nanoscale, including low-dimensional materials and quantum effects for the purpose of efficient device and memory functionality. Of importance are trends and benchmarking considerations for moving beyond Moore’s law. In the last two years the NTC TC06 Nanoelectronics succeeded in starting new initiatives and promoting technological innovation and excellence in nanotechnology for the benefit of humanity through numerous conference, publications, education, and outreach activities including organizing NTC conferences, editing special issues in NTC publications, creating a new chapter and hosting a summer school. Please join the NTC TAC to welcome the following new TC Chairs:

Dr. Xiaogang Liang for TC3, Dr. Attila Bonyar for TC11, Dr. Lin Lin and Dr. Adam Noel for TC14. Congratulations to the new chairs/co-chairs and we look forward to working with the new chairs  closely to promote NTC technical activities.

Dr. Xiaogan Liang is currently working as an Associate Professor at The Mechanical Engineering Department of University of Michigan (UM). Before joining UM, Dr. Liang was a Staff Scientist working at The Molecular Foundry, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His current research interests are focused on nanofabrication, nanomanufacturing, microsystem integration, nanoelectronics and optoelectronics based on low-dimensional nanostructures, biosensors, and microdrone sensors. Dr. Liang has coauthored 72 journal publications and >50 conference presentations, has given >30 invited presentations, and has 8 US patents. Dr. Liang is the recipient of NSF CAREER Award, and he is the member of Sigma Xi, IEEE, and ASME. Dr. Liang obtained a BS in Physics from Peking University, a MS in Condensed Matter Physics from Institute of Semiconductors, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University.

 

Dr. Attila Bonyár is an associate professor and head of the Nanotechnology Laboratory at the Department of Electronics Technology, Faculty of Electronics Engineering and Informatics, Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He has two M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering (2009) and biomedical engineering (2011), a Ph.D. (2014), and habilitation (2021) in electrical engineering. He co-authored 121 publications, including 50 journal papers. In the past decade, he received best/excellent paper/presentation awards at various (mostly IEEE) conferences 10 times. He was elected to serve in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) Electron Devices and Electronics Technology Scientific Committee for two terms (in 2017 and in 2021).

 

 

Lin Lin is an Associate Professor in the College of Electronics and Information Engineering at Tongji University, Shanghai, China. He received his B.Eng. and M.Eng. degree from Tianjin University, China in 2004 and 2007, respectively, and received the Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 2012. He was an EU Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Warwick, UK. His research interests include molecular communication, neural communication, and internet of nanothings. He hosted the 1st China-Germany Molecular Communication Workshop in 2019. He served as the TPC co-chair of BICT 2020 and Workshops Chair of BICT 2021. Lin is currently the Chair of the IEEE Molecular, Biological, and Multi-Scale Communications Technical Committee.

 

 

Adam Noel is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering (Systems and Information Stream) at the University of Warwick in Coventry, UK, which he joined in 2018. He received the B.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2009 from Memorial University in St. John’s, NL, Canada. He received the M.A.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2011 and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2015, both from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In 2013, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Institute for Digital Communication at Friedrich-Alexander-University in Erlangen, Germany. He was also a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Ottawa (2016-2018).

Adam is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Molecular, Biological, and Multi-Scale Communications and was previously an Associate Editor for IEEE Communications Letters (2017-2021). He currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Molecular, Biological and Multi-Scale Communications Technical Committee of the IEEE Communications Society. He has received several awards from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada, including a Postdoctoral Fellowship. He also received a Best Paper Award at the 2016 IEEE International Conference on Communications.

 

The NTC TAC would like to thank the outstanding services provided by the following TC chairs who recently stepped down from their chair positions and we look forward to their continuous support to the NTC technical activities:

2021 Technical Committee Award to TC-03

Congratulations to TC-03 on Nanofabrication, 2021 TC Award Winner!

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council Technical Committee Award is a recognition for the work accomplished by one of the IEEE NTC TCs during 2-year period. The NTC TCs serve as focal points for research in various area of Nanotechnology. The activities developed by the NTC TCs are appreciated according their impact in the scientific, literary and educational areas coordinated by IEEE NTC.

It is our pleasure to announce that the 2021 NTC TC Award is accorded to NTC TC03 Nanofabrication chaired by Wei Wu (left). Without any doubt we can say that the nanofabrication technologies have made great impacts on everyone’s lives through the semiconductor industry.

At present they spread beyond this field. They have reached the stage that they can be used in much broader applications, such as sensing, bio-medical devices and human-machine interface. In the last two years the NTC TC03 Nanofabrication succeeded in starting new initiatives and promoting technological innovation and excellence in nanotechnology for the benefit of humanity through participation in NTC conferences, publications and education, and outreach activities. Kickoff: TC-16 on Quantum, Neuromorphic and Unconventional Computing

It is a pleasure to announce the first meeting of the newborn Technical Committee on Quantum, Neuromorphic and Unconventional computing of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council.     New Technical Committees

    The Nanotechnology Council is forming two new Technical Committees:

    TC16 – Quantum technologies
    TC16 will be an interdisciplinary guide for scientists working in quantum, neuromorphic and unconventional computing envisioning how nanotechnology will impact their development. A challenge will be bringing researchers of the three different communities to create a common language, with the aim to transfer solutions and exchange idea among the communities. Planned activities are: creation of a robust TC membership; organization of conference sessions; organization of special issues; articles on perspectives.     TC 17 – Plasmas and plasma-based technologies in quantum
    To fabricate high performance nanodevices and nano-systems, atomic layer and damage-free plasma nanomanufacturing technologies are indispensable. For this purpose, it is essential to develop methods for generating and transporting charged particles, UV photons, and reactive species on the surface to suppress damages and to control atomic layer surface chemical reactions in plasma processing. Achieving control of atomic layer surface chemical reactions requires diagnostics and sensors for both the plasma and resultant surface states but also models (phenomenological to the first principles) that can predict process results. Therefore, our final target is the development and implementation of intelligent plasma nanomanufacturing technologies in accordance with Industry 4.0 and 5.0 standards.     Announcing New Chair of the NTC TC Nanomagnetics (TC12)

    It is our pleasure to announce the new Chair of the NTC TC12 Nanomagnetics, Chih-Huang Lai. On behalf of the NTC TAC, I would like to thank him for taking this responsibility and wish him a very successful leadership.

    Prof. Lai received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University in 1997. He joined Read-Rite Co. and worked on TMR and GMR magnetic heads. He became an assistant Professor in National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in 1998. Prof. Lai is currently Dean of College of Engineering in NTHU and Tsing Hua Chair Professor. His research works focus on magnetic materials, spintronic devices and CIGS thin film solar cells. He served as Education Chair, Publicity Chair and Membership Chair for IEEE Magnetics Society and President of Taiwan Association of Magnetics Technology. He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed SCI papers and obtained more than 40 patents. He is an IEEE Fellow and MRS-Taiwan Fellow.

     

     

     

     

    Announcing New Chair of the NTC TC on Nanosensors and Nanoactuators (TC7)

    It is our pleasure to announce the new Chair of the NTC TC7 Nanosensors and Nanoactuators, Inkyu Park. On behalf of the NTC TAC, I would like to thank him for taking this responsibility and wish him a very successful leadership.

    Prof. Inkyu Park received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from KAIST (1998), UIUC (2003) and UC Berkeley (2007), respectively, all in mechanical engineering. He has been with the department of mechanical engineering at KAIST since 2009 as a faculty and is currently a KAIST Endowed Chair Professor and Full Professor. Prior to joining KAIST, he was a research specialist at Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center (BSAC) in 2007-2008, CTO & Co-founder of nPrintSolutions, inc. in 2008-2009, and visiting researcher at Hewlett Packard Laboratory in 2005-2008. His research interests are nanofabrication, smart sensors, nanomaterial-based sensors, flexible & wearable electronics, self-powered sensors, and sensors for environmental and healthcare monitoring applications. He has published more than 120 international journal articles (SCI indexed) and 160 international conference proceeding papers in the area of MEMS/NANO engineering (h index=38, total citation >7600). He is a recipient of IEEE NANO Best Paper Award (2010), HP Open Innovation Research Award (2009-2012), KINC Fusion Research Award (2016, 2018), Grand Prize of KAIST School of Engineering Research Innovation Award (2020), and Excellent Researcher Award from the Society of Micro/Nano-Systems (2020).
