NMDC 2018 Report

The 2018 IEEE Nano Materials & Devices Conference (NMDC), sponsored by the IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC), was held on October 14th to 17th in Portland, Oregon. There were a total of 172 attendees from 22 countries, including 47 students, 115 “university” and 57 “other.” Conference details can be found on the conference website at:

www.ieeenmdc.org/nmdc-2018/

There were 164 paper presentations including six plenary papers. All papers have been disseminated to all the conference attendees in the conference proceedings and are now also available on-line in IEEE Xplore®. As special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology is now in preparation. There five best/paper awards, all won by students.

The nanotechnology field is inherently multi-disciplinary and the technical sessions covered the fields of preparation, properties (electrical, optical, thermal, mechanical, magnetic, photonic) and applications of nanomaterials and nanodevices (energy, nanoelectronics, sensors, biomedical,) including experimental and simulation studies, focused on nanoparticles and composites, CNTs and 2D materials, etc. The academic disciplines represented include physics, chemistry, electrical and mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, biology, and more. In addition to the traditional technical sessions, there was one evening panel session on nanotechnology education, and two student focused evening workshops on early career skills and the “Art of Negotiation.”

To support student participation, a $10,000 NSF grant was distributed among 18 students at US institutions to offset the costs of attendance, primary to cover hotel accommodations but also as partial reimbursements of conference registration fees. These 18 students presented a total of 24 papers between them.

This annual conference rotates between Europe, Asia and North America, and brings together researchers, educators, and students working on the development of nanomaterials and nanodevices for space, electronic, magnetic, sensor, photonic systems and biomedical applications. NMDC 2019 will be in Stockholm, Sweden, from the 27th to the 30th of October (http://www.ieeenmdc.org/nmdc-2019/).
