Announcing Nanotechnology Council 2018 Technical Committee Award

Nanotechnology Council 2018 Technical Committee Award

Dr. M. F. Fréchette, NTC Vice-president Technical Activities

It is my pleasure to announce that the 2018 IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) TC AWARD was given to the Technical Committee (TC) on Nano-acoustic devices, Processes and Materials. This committee was chosen based on their 2018 achievements. During that time, the committee’s work was guided by Professors Xiaoning Jiang and James Spicer.

The main objective of this technical committee is to promote the activities associated with the emerging and interdisciplinary frontier of nanoscale acoustics, promoting scientific discoveries and engineering developments in materials, design, fabrication, and device applications. This committee has now been renewed for the next 4 years.

Xiaoning Jiang is a Distinguished Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and a University Faculty Scholar at North Carolina State University. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University and University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Jiang received his Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University (1997) and his Postdoctoral training from the Pennsylvania State University (1997-2001). He was the Chief Scientist and Vice President for TRS Technologies, Inc. prior to joining NC State in 2009. Dr. Jiang is the author and co-author of two books, 5 book chapters, 9 issued US Patents, over 100 peer reviewed journal papers and over 100 conference papers on piezoelectric ultrasound transducers, ultrasound for medical imaging and therapy, drug delivery, ultrasound NDT/NDE, smart materials and structures and M/NEMS. Dr. Jiang is a member of the technical program committee for a few international conferences including IEEE NANO, IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium (TPC-5), IEEE NMDC, SPIE Smart Structures and NDE, and ASME IMECE. He serves as the NanoAcoustics Technical Committee Co-Chair for IEEE NTC, IEEE NTC Distinguished Lecturer (2018, 2019), an Associated Editor for IEEE Nanotechnology Magazine, an editorial board member for the journal Sensors, and a Senior Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Engineering and Science in Medical Diagnostics and Therapy. Dr. Jiang also served as an IEEE UFFC-S Representative to NTC (2014-2018). Dr. Jiang is an ASME Fellow.

James B. Spicer is a professor of Materials Science and Engineering at The Johns Hopkins University and is a member of the Principal Professional Staff at The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.  He currently chairs the Materials Science and Engineering Program in the Johns Hopkins University Engineering for Professionals Program. His research focuses on the interactions of photons with materials for processing and characterization and currently includes efforts related to ultrafast studies of nanoscale thermal and acoustic transport, ultrafast laser-based processing, optical property studies of spectrally-tailored coatings for extreme environments as well as ultra low-loss optical materials for high energy laser systems. He is a senior member of IEEE. He co-chairs the IEEE Nanotechnology Council’s technical committee on Nanoacoustic Devices, Processes and Materials and has served as the Society Representative for the IEEE UFFC-S to the Nanotechnology Council.
